An Interview with David Wylie - Toastmaster

  Interview With:  David Wyliedavid_wylie1

Company Name: Toastmaster & Master of Ceremonies

  Website: http://www.toastmaster2u.co.uk

Location: Kent & the South East

So what attracted you to becoming a Toastmaster?
I have always enjoyed public speaking and was asked to be a Master of Ceremonies at a Wedding and enjoyed it so much, I decided to take it more seriously and was trained at a School for Toastmasters.

Did you find it hard to break into the career of being a Toastmaster?
It takes time to make a career as a Toastmaster. You have to look at this profession on a long term bases. From training to getting your self known would take about 5 to 6 years.

Do you have to have any qualifications in order to be a toastmaster?
No. You need to have a good knowledge of English and the written word. Be able to take notes when talking to clients. This may include a visit to their home or venue. People skills are a very important part of being a Toastmaster. Being able to read in advance things that may cause a problem for the organizer of a function.

Do you only attend weddings, or are there other events that you have been part of?
No.  There are many events that a professionally trained Toastmaster are able to perform. I officiate at Award Ceremonies, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, Charity Dinners & Events, City & Livery Dinners, Civil Ceremonies, Corporate Events, Conferences & Seminars, Diplomatic Functions, Fashion Shows, Formal Dinners, Ladies Evenings, Parliamentary Occasions, Product Launches, Receptions, Rotary & Round Table, Royal Occasions, Society & Institute Functions, Anniversaries and All Faith Weddings.

What are the main benefits of having a toastmaster on the day?
Having planned your day with the Toastmaster, you can rest assured that your big day will run smoothly with the presents of a Toastmaster running your Wedding. Being able to read in advance things that may cause a problem for the organizer of a function and when in times of problems, you must be able to think on your feet.

Have you any advice for a couple planning their day?
Book your Toastmaster as early as you can. As your Toastmaster, we can sit and discuss your wedding day. I can help and advise in the planning of your wedding. Remember, Toastmasters have a wealth of knowledge. If you pay for their services then you should use them.
Rest assured that you can sit back along with all parties involved and enjoy the day knowing there is a Professional at hand.

Can you be booked for a full day only, or a half day?  What do you advise?
This depends on the type of wedding you are organising. If it is a wedding reception followed by the Opening Dance when the evening guests arrive, then just book your Toastmaster until then.

My advice?

If there is a lot of activity after the Opening Dance, then book your Toastmaster until the end. If you are not sure about what you require, ask the advice of your Toastmaster. As your Toastmaster, I will give you an honest opinion if required or not.

What’s the funniest or strangest experience you have had at a wedding?
Strangest / funniest thing was when the wedding cake arrived. It should have had Turrets made from icing sugar iced to the cake, but in transit the Turrets had broken off. The chef at the venue refused to touch the cake, so off came the red coat and I requested a piping bag from the chef. I then removed the Turrets from the rear of the cake and iced them onto the front of the cake where they could be seen.

The Bride and Bridegroom knew nothing of the problem until told after the Wedding Breakfast when the cake had been cut. I was given a big thank you from the Bride and Bridegroom(and a kiss from the Bride).

What does a Toastmaster do when they are not toast mastering?
I am a Beadle for three Livery Companies within the City of London and I am a Freeman of the City of London. I enjoy DIY, listening to classical music and spending time with my family and friends. My wife and I have two children Martin and Claire who we love dearly. We have two wonderful Granddaughters Jessica and Isabel and love spending as much time as possible with them.

What’s the best part of the wedding day for you?
I enjoy the whole day. Being a part of the wedding celebration is such a magical and joyous occasion.

Which areas of the UK do you cover? Do you go abroad?
I mainly cover Kent and the South East but have travelled further afield on many occasions.
I do go abroad and have been Toastmaster to Weddings in Canada, Italy and France.

What alternatives are there to the traditional receiving line?
The Top Table should be served first, as they will finish their meal first. The Bride, Bridegroom and their parents can then take their time to go around to each table and welcome the guests. This would normally be done when booking the venue, as you would need a little more time between courses.

Random Question…What would you spend your last pound on?
My family.
