    Interview With: Lloyd Glover

    Company Name: Tempo Dance

What is/are Tempo Dance?
We are a dance school, specialising in Ballroom, Latin, Salsa & American Smooth styles.  We teach all ages and abilities from complete beginners to competitors and trainee teachers.

How did Tempo Dance get started and how long has the business been going?
I started dancing aged 6 in 1977 and fell in love with it straight away.  I have never really stopped and after completing my exams I started helping out teaching at the school I had been learning in. I started Tempo Dance in 1996 at the age of 25, mainly through the encouragement of family and mentors who were convinced I had the ability to run my own school.  We have just celebrated our 15th Anniversary and are still going strong.

Have you always wanted to teach dancing?
I have been teaching dance for over 20 years now and I love it.  I am very lucky to have realised my dream of making my passion for dance teaching into a career.

Which area of the UK do you cover?
We cover all of Kent and South London, currently a little of Essex too.

What styles of dancing do you teach?
We teach Ballroom, Latin American, Salsa & American Smooth.  Pretty much all the dance styles shown on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ are the ones we teach.

On average how many lessons would a bride & groom need?
That really depends on the complexity of the routine they want me to choreograph for them.  If they just want to get round the floor then I would say a couple of hours would suffice most people.  If they want a dance with a bit more flair and a few moves thrown in for effect, then usually about 5.  If they want a ‘wow factor’ routine (like the Dirty Dancing Routine), then I would say that about 12 would be needed. It also depends on the ability of the couple to a certain extent.

Which style of dance excites you most?
At the moment its American Smooth.  It’s a fairly new style in the UK, coming from America.  It is loosely based on the Ballroom dances but has much more freedom of hold and is really exciting to choreograph.  It is proving very popular at the moment with more schools starting to offer lessons in it.  Think Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers style and you’re on the right lines.

What is your favourite film or book?
Favourite film is Shawshank Redemption, favourite book it tricky as I’m an avid reader and have always got a couple of books on the go.  I’m currently reading ‘Notes From a Small Island’ by Bill Bryson but I usually enjoy anything by Jeffrey Deaver (author of The Bone Collector) or James Herbert.

Random Question...What would you spend your last pound on?
If it was just a pound, probably chocolate!

What's the best thing about your job?
I love watching people learn and achieve.  Seeing someone learn a new figure or master a routine is a great feeling. I also get a lot of satisfaction when my students take exams and get the brilliant results they usually get.  It makes me very pleased to have helped them achieve those results.   Spending so much time having fun & dancing is the best job in the world.

What's you top tip for choosing a dance teacher?
Make sure they are qualified and experienced.  The biggest tip is to try to meet them first and make sure you are going to be able to get on with them.  You won’t enjoy it so much if you learn from someone who you don’t really gel with.

Where can I find out more about Tempo Dance?
